Our sustainability story

In 2022 Waste Management took the equivalent of 250,000 cars off the road saving 900 million kg of CO2 emissions and produced enough electricity from waste to power 25,000 homes.

These are just two of the facts featuring in our latest GRI Sustainability Report, which showcases the incredible work our teams do around the country.

Some other key facts from 2022 include:

  • Our electric truck fleet has travelled over 1,000,000km saving 375,000 litres of diesel and preventing 1,008,000kg of CO2e from entering the atmosphere
  • We have reduced our operational greenhouse gas emissions by 24% over the last five years
  • We launched our Te Taniwha o te kai kirihou (plastic eating monster) which turns old and damaged wheelie bins into plastic chips to make new wheelie bins
  • We launched Sustainability Services, which helps customers reduce both their waste and carbon footprint
  • We turned over 85,000 tonnes of food and garden waste into compost
  • By the end of 2022 we had converted 28 diesel trucks to electric
  • We converted almost 15,000 tonnes of old tyres into tyre-derived fuel.
