Operator Spotlight: Logan Thompson

LT-Hero

As part of Driver and Operator Appreciation Week, we are celebrating the remarkable contributions of our dedicated staff. Today, we highlight Logan Thompson from our Napier Recycling branch, a super mum and an exemplary team member.

A Journey with WM New Zealand

Logan started her journey with WM New Zealand in 2021 as a recycling sort line operator. Over the years, she has progressed to become a machine operator, a role that involves sorting through cardboard, mixed paper, and LDPE. "Sometimes, the team and I come across contamination in the products, and we need to take out as much of it as we can, and as safely as we can," Logan explains. Her commitment to maintaining high standards in recycling operations has been unwavering.

Learning and Growing Every Day

When asked what she enjoys most about her role, Logan emphasises the constant learning opportunities. "I get to learn different things daily, with machinery, the baler, and about the products coming in and out. It’s also nice being able to go at my own pace without having too much pressure. The team works hard, and each day we aim to process 40 bales, but sometimes incoming volumes are not enough."

Logan cherishes the sense of community at WM New Zealand. "The Napier Recycling team has formed a bond with each other, and even beyond our site, I have always felt welcomed by the WM whānau. I have been provided opportunities to step up in my role, training some of my fellow teammates in the sort line as well as a machine operator. When the team leader is away, I take the initiative to look after the team and the work."

Recently, Logan had the opportunity to assist at the Maurice Road site in Auckland, dealing with massive volumes. "While this meant I had to be away from the kids for a week and the odd working hours of 3 pm to midnight, it was a great experience working at another site in the company. I found everyone to be so welcoming, and I really appreciate this from the WM whānau. One thing I found interesting is that different regions will have varying types of contamination across different materials!"

Balancing Work and Family

Logan is not only a dedicated worker but also a super mum. "I take my work seriously, but my kids are my everything. I have two daughters, a five-year-old and an eight-month-old, Cussiana and Iris. They are my motivation to work and provide the best life for them. I like seeing people smile and be genuinely happy from something I do or say, and more importantly, seeing my girls happy and laughing."

Inspiring Fellow Female Operators

Logan also has a message for her fellow female operational staff. "I encourage my fellow female operational staff to strive to be the best in what they do, and to not let anyone’s opinion divert them from their goals." Her encouragement and support have been instrumental in fostering a positive and empowering environment for women at WM New Zealand.

Logan’s success and dedication are not hers alone. She is part of a hardworking team known as Kotahitanga, which includes Jannine Getalado, Michaela Zaugg, Mohit Tyagi, and Sarikha McCarthy. Together, they exemplify the collaborative spirit that drives WM New Zealand forward.

As we continue to celebrate Driver and Operator Appreciation Week, we are proud to acknowledge the outstanding contributions of Logan Thompson. Her journey from a recycling sort line operator to a machine operator, combined with her role as a super mum, serves as an inspiration to us all. Logan’s dedication, commitment, and positive attitude embody the values that make WM New Zealand a great place to work.
