We’re proud to announce the winners of our Annual Waste Management Awards. These awards recognise individuals and teams who have shown outstanding success, contribution and excellence throughout 2018. Awards were given out for six categories including Safety, Sustainability, Service, Innovation, Values and Team of the Year.
Of almost 60 very deserving nominations, we awarded six winners and six highly commended at a special function at Sails Restaurant in Auckland.
The Safety award goes to team members who have gone above and beyond in driving, modelling and implementing health and safety at Waste Management. These individuals demonstrate exceptional safety behaviour every day – not just as a one off occurrence.
Winner: Greg Nel, Regional Manager - Dunedin
Greg demonstrated his full commitment to safety by setting a goal to have all drivers in his region achieve a five star rating in Eroad – which was met! Through Greg’s initiative, potential incidents were avoided.
The Sustainability award goes to team members who have contributed to sustainability either internally or externally. This includes individuals who have an excellent environmental record or have improved it substantially as a result of action taken. Or a person who has developed a sustainable customer offering.
Winners: Ross O’Loughlin, Branch Manager – Wellington Technical Services
Ross has played a key role in the sustainability of the Technical Services Wellington team since his relocation from Auckland. Ross has worked tirelessly to lead his team to achieve more sustainable activities on site.
The Service award goes to team members who consistently show high levels of customer service, always go above and beyond what is required, and achieve excellent client feedback.
Highly Commended: Alister Boal
Joint Winner: Caleb Ahu and Breena Everson
Caleb is a dedicated high performer at the Whakatane Branch who has provided exceptional service, both internally and externally. Caleb has provided leadership to the team over the past 12 months delivering a high level of service. His dedication and commitment was reflected in the Whakatane District Council ratepayer customer satisfaction for kerbside collections, which scored 91%, the highest score out of all council services.
Breena has been a valued member of the team at Redvale for over 20 years. In the last 12 months Breena has worked many extra hours. She is known to all the customers with consistent feedback and appreciation that she goes the extra mile.
The Innovation Award goes to a team member who identifies or implements improvements and enhancements to our existing processes, products and services, or has helped attract new customers or retain existing customers with a new initiative or idea, or takes us into entirely new territory – developing new products, services or models outside our core business.
Winner: Yunan Wang, Sales Analyst
Yunan has been instrumental in delivering some great improvements streamlining and standardising our systems and processes. A super-user on our technology, he delivers quality analysis and problem solving, and also helps fellow team members.
The Values award goes to a team member who lives and breathes our values (Safety is Everything, Care and Responsibility, Challenges Energise Us and Community Commitment) every day.

Highly Commended: Nicole Shailer
Winner: Daniel Coleman, Branch Manager, Auckland Technical Services
Daniel demonstrates our Waste Management values through safety processes, identifying innovation and sustainable options for disposal processes and enthusiastically managing his team and teaching them new things.
This award recognises a team of two or more who collectively have had a positive influence on the company, customers and / or the community. This team shows outstanding operating performance and continuously achieves over and above their initiatives. The team not only exceeds expectations, but demonstrates team values through supporting one another, cooperating and overcoming challenges together which positively impact the business.
Highly Commended: Tirohia Landfill
Winner: Blenheim Branch
The Blenheim Branch is a smaller team who have worked together to support the region’s growth and provide excellent service since it was acquired three years ago from Waste Services Marlborough. The team explores new opportunities to educate customers and creates a safe and happy work environment to achieve in.
