After an impressive 47-year career, owner-driver and WM New Zealand legend James White has retired, leaving behind a legacy of dedication and camaraderie. As James prepared to say goodbye to his beloved role, he shared a bittersweet regret—he would never get to drive over the newly installed wheel wash at the Whitford landfill before it officially opened.
Determined to ensure James didn’t leave with this regret, Operations Manager Robin Martin stepped in to organise a special farewell. An early opening of the wheel wash was arranged, complete with a guard of honour to celebrate James’s remarkable career.
With a tear in his eye and a broad smile, James made the first ceremonial drive over the wheel wash, marking a fitting end to his career. Following this touching tribute, he celebrated his retirement with the teams from Whitford landfill and East Tamaki RTS, both of which have been integral parts of his journey.
Regional Manager Mike Winterbottom highlighted James’s significant mana within these teams. “James has been a regular and friendly face, and his presence will be greatly missed. His contributions over the years have been invaluable,” said Mike.
James began his journey with WM New Zealand back in 1977—the same year Star Wars first graced cinemas. Starting in the workshop, he quickly found a passion for driving, appreciating the freedom of the road and the ever-changing Auckland scenery. When he transitioned to being an owner-driver, a senior manager helped him secure financing for his first hook truck, setting the stage for his storied career.
On his final visit to Whitford, the weighbridge team—normally cheerful and smiling—couldn't hold back their tears, describing James as one of the most polite and well-liked drivers they had ever worked with.
Operations Manager Vini Alves also honoured James with a celebration at our East Tamaki office, reflecting on his long-standing commitment and kindness.
“Kia ora, James. Your lifelong WM friends wish you the happiest of retirements. Your years of hard work, integrity, and respect have left a lasting impact,” said Vini, Mike, and Robin.
Thank you to Vini Alves, Mike Winterbottom, and Robin Martin for sharing this heartfelt update on James White’s retirement.
