I’m lucky to have such an amazing team. Everyone is incredibly kind, and we’ve become great friends.
Michaela Zaugg
Sustainability Graduate at WM New Zealand
a Bachelor of Science, majoring in Environmental Science and Applied Conservation at Auckland University of Technology
As sustainability continues to shape the future of Aotearoa, young professionals like Michaela Zaugg are leading the way with a passion for protecting the environment and making a meaningful impact. Michaela, a recent graduate of Auckland University of Technology with a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science and Applied Conservation, has recently joined the Graduate Training Programme at WM New Zealand, where she is putting her knowledge and enthusiasm for sustainability into action.
"My love for animals and nature has always driven my studies and career choices," Michaela shares. "During my time at university, I worked at a pet store and an animal hotel, which gave me a great foundation in caring for animals. After completing my degree, I worked at the SPCA in the small animals area. It was an incredibly rewarding experience, and I still volunteer there on the weekends."
While working with animals brought Michaela great joy, her drive to make a broader environmental impact led her to pursue her ultimate goal of a career in sustainability. In 2023, Michaela took the leap and joined WM New Zealand. "It was tough leaving the rescue bunnies behind, but I knew it was time to take the next step. I was fortunate to land this role at WM New Zealand. The team is wonderful, and the flexibility of the role makes it even more enjoyable."
Michaela has found herself in a supportive and collaborative environment at WM New Zealand. "I’m lucky to have such an amazing team. Everyone is incredibly kind, and we’ve become great friends," she says. "We recently volunteered to plant trees together, and it was such an inspiring day. It was not only great for team-building but also a reminder of why we do the work we do. Everyone here really has each other’s back."
Working in sustainability has given Michaela the opportunity to collaborate with different teams across the business. "Because of the nature of my role, I work with people from various parts of the business all over New Zealand. Everyone has been so willing to help, and that’s something I really appreciate. It’s great to feel supported in every aspect of the job."
Each day at WM New Zealand offers new challenges and exciting opportunities for Michaela. "No two days are the same, which is what makes this job so exciting," she says. "A typical day starts with checking and responding to emails at 8:30 a.m., and then the rest of the day is spent working on various projects or attending meetings."
One of Michaela’s recent projects was hosting a staff competition to celebrate Earth Day. "We invited the team to send in photos of how they care for the environment, and those who participated were entered into a lucky draw for vouchers. The entries were incredibly heart-warming and inspiring. It was amazing to see the different ways our team members contribute to the environment in their own lives."
After a busy day, Michaela enjoys catching up with her fellow graduates over lunch at the on-site café before heading home at 5 p.m. "It’s nice to spend time with the other graduates, sharing experiences and ideas. We’re all learning so much from each other."
I’m lucky to have such an amazing team. Everyone is incredibly kind, and we’ve become great friends.

Reflecting on her journey, Michaela offers some valuable advice to students and aspiring graduates. "I’d say ‘yes’ to every opportunity that comes your way, both in your work and personal life. Stepping outside your comfort zone leads to some of life’s most rewarding experiences. I recommend checking out the ‘Yes Theory’ on YouTube – it really highlights the importance of embracing discomfort to find personal growth."
